Samana

The peninsula Samana is a unique caribbean landscape with rustling coconut - trees, humpbacked hills, isolated whitesanded bays, a hidden mountainwaterfall,  small villages and the charming “maintown” Santa Barbara de Samana” .

In front of the coastline small islands (Cayos) seem to be floating on top of the blue water. The most known beeing Cayo Levantado.

Halbinsel Samana

Traveller, if you want to go to Samana, there are 2 routes for you: or you drive through the marches of the Rio Yuna and have no advantage, or you take the ferry from Sabana de la Mar, wich you will not forget in a hurry!

These routes really exist but are rather for the seasoned traveller or “grand tour traveller”. Every evening at five the ferry leaves from Samanatown. After all there is the bus, in which the airconditioning is on full blast ( the Dominicans love their airconditionig) one can feel a bit chilly. One can also take a taxi from Puerto Plata or very comfortably take an internal airplane from Puerto Plata or Sto. Domingo to El Portillo, the small grass airfield close to Las Terrenas.

At the end of the day it is better that no huge touistlines can land on the Peninsula, that would make the idyllic situation soon come to an end. Planned is a large airport at Nagua but up to then it’s still the caribbean way – comfortable…

The Samana Peninsula counts amongst the most appealing areas of the Dominican Republic. She points like an outstretched finger into the Atlantic Ocean. Samana is separated by a mountain – range up to 500 meters. Here travellers will  find lots of beautiful beaches, the mainbeach of Las Terrenas, the Playa Bonita and the beach of Las Galeras count amongst  the most beautiful of the whole island.

Samana is large enough  for everybody to find their own little corner. This pearl has not yet become a tourist funfair site. It is a tourist’s must but is quiet different from other centers.

The biggest attraction according to the guide is the Cayo Levantado which during the tourist season could be refrained from. There would be so much more to write about the spectacular coutryside. Under infos is more Information o. n things to see definitely.
