Right
and left to the road nestle small brightly painted houses, alone or as
hamlets which children and dogs seem to take over. Fresh washing on long
lines mingle inbetween the houses with chickens and pets. People are
sitting outside on the veranda or by the side of the road and only very
rarely can one see somebody
who is not in a good mood.
The
road is an adventure, the driver knows every pothole and drives once
left, once right. If one
hires a car, one has to have nerves of steel and definitly be on the
look out. Speed is not a must, but could become expensive.
The
alternative
A
fligt from Herera (great Airport in Santo Domingo) to El Portillo. Spend
one night in Santo Domingo, at the classical Hotel Palacio in the Center
of the colonial old town. Enjoy a day looking around
and take the local shuttle plane the next afternoon, that will
give you a birdseyeview of the loneliness and beauty of the island and
will land you after 40 minutes just beside Las Terrenas.
